Navigating Being A Black Female Nerd

There’s something about being a blerd that comes with a very unique set of experiences. However, being a female blerd comes with its own trials and triumphs. From dating to being called a “white girl”, living the blerd life ain’t easy. Let’s navigate some of these issues together, shall we?

You Can Call Me A “White Girl” But You Can’t Take Away My Fandom

Being called a “white girl” upon discovering my obsession with Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a hard thing to deal with at first. As much as I envied the pencil straight blonde hair that could get wet in the rain without deactivating a relaxer, I still didn’t want to be denied who I was. As a preteen at the ripe age of 12, I didn’t understand why I couldn’t have both: why I couldn’t be black and still love Buffy with the best of them. On top of that, being called a “white girl” by not only my peers but also my family, was extremely isolating and lonely. Because I wasn’t able to give up being black and I wasn’t willing to give up staying glued to the WB every Tuesday night.

There Are Many Others Like You: FIND THEM

I spent much of my childhood thinking I was the only black girl obsessed with all things nerdy. Honestly, it wasn’t until after high school that I started to find people who were not only just like me, they were black too! I made lifelong friends that I could play Pokemon Go with, attend comic book conventions with, and even combine our black girl magic and cosplay together.

Do The Cosplay Anyway

Speaking of Cosplay, there aren’t a lot of black characters to choose from if you choose to cosplay. My motto? Do it anyway. I remember being crushed by a classmate in kindergarten being told that I couldn’t be Cinderella or The Pink Power Ranger for Halloween because I was black. They’d be shocked to learn that even though I’m an adult, I’ve happily broken all of those rules

Dating Can (and Will) Suck

Once you find your friends, dating should be easy right?

Wrong. It seems like female blerds are really at the bottom of the totem pole. An issue I often ran into was my nerdiness turning other black men off. In my attempts to date another blerd, I’d find that he was not attracted to black women. When trying to date outside my race I would find that they weren’t attracted to black women either. It was frustrating as heck. But just like with finding your Blerd Tribe, you will find the one eventually, you just have to weed through a bunch of bad ones
